Ghana To Get More Oil
Ghana has the potential to obtain eight billion barrels of oil, equivalent to $560 billion at an average of $70 per barrel, if its submission to extend its continental shelf is approved by the United Nations Commission of the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS).

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Collins Duada, who disclosed this at a press conference in Accra last Friday, said that the Ministry has finally prepared to submit to the CLCS for the extension of Ghana’s continental shelf, in line with Article 76 of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the sea.Ghana is seeking to extend its continental shelf beyond the existing 200 nautical miles. He said, according to a report by the international Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2000, an additional 1.23 billion tonnes of oil and 650 billion cubic meters of gas can be obtained from the offshore basin alone, if the country is given the approval to extend its maritime territory to approximately 15,000 square kilometres. He stressed that the right to explore and exploit the resources within that zone shall be exclusive to Ghana if the outer limits of the area are established and deposited at the office of the secretary-General of the United Nations before May 13, 2009.
Swine Flu poses No Threats to Us
By Francis Asamoah Tuffour
The outbreak of Swine Flu in parts of the world will not pose any threat to the country, the Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, has assured the public. Speaking to the Times yesterday on Ghana’s state of preparedness against any possible outbreak, the acting Director of the Department, Dr Enoch Boye-Mensah Koney said there is a surveillance system in place that conducts routine exercises along the country’s entry points.

In the exercise, live or dressed birds and animals imported into the country are critically examined and those suspected of having flu are vaccinated.
Dr Koney said the main job of the department is to control and prevent animal diseases that are likely to be introduced into country, adding that this core function enjoins it to be proactive in its surveillance, monitoring and evaluation roles.
“We have surveillance system that will detect anything within our territory in the shortest possible time,” he said.
Besides the department collaborates with the port authorities, the Customs Excise and Preventive Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, Ministry of Health as well as the Wildlife Department among other agencies, to constantly check, particularly, people entering the country.

Ghana got what they wanted as the Black Stars earned a perfect start in the joint 2010 African Nations Cup and World Cup qualifying, beating Benin 1-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars, pre-match favourites could have finished the game with at least three goals but had to settle for the lone goal which came just under a minute into the start of the game when Prince Tagoe stabbed in a cross from the left.
Michael Essien who captained the team as play went on following the substitution of Stephen Appiah says the scoreline did not reflect the trend of the game but admits that Benin were a tougher side.
“We are happy with the win. The most important thing was to win this game and we did exactly that. We knew we had to score early to calm things down though we could have scored more.
“But Benin was a good side. We didn’t underrate them. They came in strong and we were up for the match.
“Now we can look ahead to the next game and God willing, we can get a good result,” Essien said afterwards in a post match interview.
The opening game anxiety is now out of the way as Ghana looks up to the next game away to Mali on June 7. Mali, described as the main threat to Ghana’s World Cup qualifying chances drew 1-1 away to Sudan on Saturday.
Sulley Muntari who set up Ghana’s goal and saw his shot at goal rattle the crossbar expects another difficult game for the Black Stars. The Inter-Milan midfielder says reaching the World Cup will not come easy for Ghana.
“We are happy to have beaten Benin. We played them in Accra before the Cup of Nations and it was a bit tight so we knew they were a good side. We were expecting this. They are a good side and were here to play. The most important thing is we got our three points.
“The path to the World Cup will be difficult and we have to play well in our remaining games.” Muntari said.
Ghana seeking a second successive World Cup appearance sit at the summit of the four-team table after an opening weekend of World Cup qualifiers on the continent.
