Stephen Appiah withdraws from Ghana’s Roster

images2Captain Stephen Appiah has been forced to withdraw himself from Ghana’s deadly 32 man Roster. The fearless leader is allegedly having some pressing family issues that require immediate attention. It would indeed be difficult for the captain to perform at an optimal level when he has personal issues lurking in the background.

Stephen brings a rare quality to the Black stars, his ability to command and control the tempo of his team combined with his aggressive yet finesse nature makes him a key player of the Ghana Black stars.

The Veteran captain will surely be missed during this time. Although Stephen will not be participating in the qualifying games, Ghana’s head coach Milovan Rajevac remains confident in a deep and strong Ghanaian squad. It is a safe assumption that all of Black Star fans will patiently await the return of Captain Stephen Appiah. Regardless of the current challenges, Black stars must remain focused on the goal ahead to give the return of Captain Sephen Appiah a hope in returning back to the Black Stars to resume his role.

Accra, May 19, GNA – Government will soon put before parliament a Cyber Security Bill for consideration, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communications, said on Tuesday.

He said the bill was part of efforts to check the rising internet fraud which had become rampant among the youth. Speaking at the Meet-The-Press the minister said the bill would empower the security agencies and other organizations to wage an effective war against cyber crime in the country if passed. The minister said, the government was worried over the high rate of cyber fraud also known as “Sakawa” and one of the effective ways to deal with the situation was to pass laws that would make the trade less attractive to the perpetrators.

Rastafarianism and Reggae Music in Ghana

marley2Around the late 1960s and early 1970s, we began to see the infiltration of reggae music into the West African Region, particularly as a result of Bob Marley’s powerful presence in the music scene. Many young Africans began to view Marley with much awe; additionally, they began making linkages between reggae music and Rastafarian culture – Marley’s religion of choice.

The growth in adoration of reggae music, principally in anglophone West Africa may be directly linked to the fact that reggae had emerged from Jamaica, which is also an anglophone country. Along with reggae music came a change in fashion trends such as the adornment of Rasta’s prominent colours of red, gold, and green, the development of new social habits (i.e. smoking of cannabis), as well as the decision to wear dreadlocks: a largely abhorred hairstyle in Ghana and many other African countries.

Moreover, given that rastafarianism’s religious teachings are of Old Testament Judeo-Christian origin, makes adopting Rastafarianism an easier feat for young Africans, since the core principles of Christianity are also embedded in Rastafarianism. In fact, roughly 90% of all Rastafarians come from Christian homes. Today, in Labadi Beach, Accra we are able to find the headquarters of the Twelve Tribes – the largest group of Rastafarians in Ghana. The twelve Tribes of Israel was established by Prophet Gad of Jamaica, who travelled to Ghana in the 1980s to institute the organization.

The entire Rastafarian movement has many positive prospects, specifically in terms of the ways in which it propels Africans both in the continent and abroad – to cherish their ancestral homelands and to create unity in the face of neocolonialism. Big up Rastafarianism!

African Liberation Day 2009

African Liberation Day
Get on the Bus!

ald-logoOn May 23-24, Africans from the U.S. , Canada and elsewhere in the dispersed African world will converge on Washington , D.C. for African Liberation (ALD). Recognizing that ALD cannot just be a celebration of some liberation that the African nation has not yet won, the African Peoples Socialist Party (APSP) will be using this ALD mobilization to forever change the North American front of African (Black) liberation movement. The theme of this year’s ALD is “Separated by Colonial Slavery, Reunited by Revolutionary Resistance! “.

With this ALD mobilization the APSP is calling on African people to join the African Socialist International, a worldwide revolutionary organization to unite and liberate Africa and her dispersed people! While ALD has always been a strategic tool of the African Peoples Socialist Party to bring masses of African (Black) people into revolutionary political life, this year’s ALD will serve as the conference to consolidate the North American Region of the African Socialist International – the single revolutionary organization that will function as the general staff for the  international African revolution necessary to liberate and unite Africa and African people worldwide under the leadership of the African working class. This is a very special undertaking, as this is part of a global effort to unify the African working class all over the world. Our first ASI regional conference was in October 2008 in Sierra Leone , West Africa with over 500 African organizations in attendance and we are soon to have an East African regional conference in Nairobi , Kenya in April.

In early March the Caribbean was rocked with resistance when masses of African workers rebelled against French colonialism in Martinique and Guadeloupe . Weeks later, we saw the same type of resistance occur in Kenya and Sierra Leone , where African workers rose up against the violent conditions imposed on us by neo-colonialism in those countries. Most recently, we began to see resistance in the U.S. , where from coast to coast the African working class is beginning to carry out courageous acts of resistance against U.S. colonial oppression.

Ghana Still 3rd in Africa and 31st in the world!

stars_1Ghana maintains her 31st place on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking table.

There were no changes in the top 39 places in the latest ranking released on Wednesday by Fifa.

The Black Stars still keeps a strong place among the top five sides in Africa.

Ghana maintains her 779 points from the previous month as they are placed third on the continental ranking table with just two points separating them from the second-placed nation.

Cameroon remains Africa’s top-rated national side followed by Nigeria in that order.

Reigning European champions Spain remain unchallenged at the top of the table with a comfortable lead, followed by Germany and the Netherlands.

Since the last edition of the world ranking came out, only 22 international matches have been played worldwide, 20 qualifying games for the AFC Challenge Cup 2010 and two friendlies in Africa.

There was no international action in any of the other confederations.

They congratulated mothers for their love and commitment to the development of their children, noting that the Day “provides us all with an opportunity to thank our mothers for their selflessness and sacrifices.” According to the two, Mothers Day is the best time to say in words and deed how much we love and care for our mothers.
The message emphasized the need for the enhancement of especially the country’s health delivery system as part of the general strategies to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

“We take this opportunity to assure the women of Ghana and the entire country of our personal commitment to helping improve the lot of especially our women in conformity with the promises made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”

The First and Second Ladies also urged especially working mothers not to abandon their long cherished role of providing care for the family at all times despite the challenges that today confront career women.
