Electronic Waste In Ghana

boys-burning-electronic-cablesGhana — The latest place where we have discovered high tech toxic trash causing horrendous pollution is in Ghana. Our analysis of samples taken from two electronic waste (e-waste) scrap yards in Ghana has revealed severe contamination with hazardous chemicals.

The ever-growing demand for the latest fashionable mobile phone, flat screen TV or super-fast computer creates ever larger amounts of obsolete electronics that are often laden with toxic chemicals like lead, mercury and brominated flame retardants. Rather than being safely recycled, much of this e-waste gets dumped in developing countries. Previously, we have exposed pollution from e-waste scrap yards in China and India. Nigeria has also been identified as a dumping ground for old electronics.

Ghana To Play Sudan on Saturday

rajevacredGhana cannot afford a slip-up in their quest for a second successive FIFA World Cup™ appearance when they play Sudan in a Group D qualifier on Saturday, head coach Milovan Rajevac said on Tuesday.

The four-time African champions have pitched up camp in the Kenyan town of Naivasha, about 90 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, to acclimatise for the steamy heat of Omdurman where they will face the Desert Hawks.

Ghana have won their last two matches against Benin and Mali and another win in Sudan will virtually secure their place in the 2010 finals in South Africa.

“We have the same team that played Mali in the camp apart from defender John Paintsil who is suspended for the weekend game,” said Rajevac. “Sudan are a good team, especially when they are playing at home but we are confident of getting the three points we need,” he added.

The Black Stars, who are scheduled to play a local premiership club in a warm-up game on Wednesday, will be without their inspirational captain Stephen Appiah for the second international match due to family commitments.

Notable players in the camp include Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, Rennes striker Asamoah Gyan, Lyon defender John Mensah and goalkeeper Richard Kingson of English Premiership side Wigan.

Liverpool made the approach in January when Juventus and Arsenal enquired about Xabi Alonso, and may make another move should Alonso leave.
