Africa not buying many 2010 tickets

Ghanaian have bought highest number of WC2010 Tickets in Africa

1Fans from Europe and the Americas have bought the bulk of tickets for the 2010 World Cup so far, with African countries trailing, the head of host South Africa’s organising committee said on Thursday.

The month-long tournament will be hosted for the first time on the African continent and has been punted as a continental event.

Only five African countries, including host South Africa, are able to qualify. More Africans may purchase tickets if their countries qualify, said Danny Jordaan, chief executive of South Africa’s World Cup organising committee.

“We sold just over 800,000 (out of a total of 3.2 million) of which about 240,000 were sold inside South Africa,” Jordaan told a media briefing in Cape Town, host venue for the final draw on December 4.

Mills – Government Is Working Hard To Fix Economy

millsThe President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has said the government is aware of the high expectations and anxiety of the electorate and is working hard to fix the economy in order to fulfil its electoral mandate.

He said contrary to the assertions of its political opponents that the issues confronting the well-being of the country had got out of its hand, “the government is in full control of developments in the country”.

President Mills said although the economy that the government inherited on its assumption of political power in January 2009 was severely challenged, several interventions had been taken to salvage it from a further slide and put it on an even keel to cushion the plight of the broad masses of the people.

Interacting with the presidential press corps at the Castle, Osu, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, President Mills said the government would not engage in any blame game with its opponents but concentrate all its efforts at fixing the economy to deal with the social problems of the people.

“We are not interested in blame games; we want to solve the problems of Ghanaians. That was why we were elected,” he said.

Sidney Performs At Miss Ghana Today

A great deal of excitement is expected when the Miss Ghana and National Dance Championship train gets to the Volta ghanalinx sidneyRegion today, July 24, with a thrilling package scheduled for the  GNAT Hall at Ho.

The Miss Ghana train has already made stops at Wa, Bolgatanga, Tamale, Accra and Koforidua.

The Ho event is being anxiously looked forward to because controversial hiplife artiste, Sidney, will unveil his latest work, ‘Economic Mobile Phone’ there.

Music fans in Ho would be the first to hear a live presentation of Sidney’s newest song which is a follow-up to his very popular ‘Africa Monie’ hit released early last year.

“The song generally talks about how people are working hard but still cannot make ends meet. Ho people will be the first to get a feel of it and I leave it to them to judge whether it is controversial or not.”

Sidney started the Nananom Hiplife group around 1997 but it disintegrated and he went solo, recording Tinana (2001), Apuskeleke (2002), Scent Noo (2003) and Obiaa Nye Obiaa (2005). Barima Bii Ba containing Africa Monie and 11 other songs came out last year.

Chris Adamah, the CEO of Media Whizz Kids, organisers of the Miss Ghana and National Dance Championship, said he was happy they were going to work with Sidney again because he has nationwide following and the Miss Ghana platform would be a very good one for him to reach his fans with his new work.

Ghana Set To Play Namibia In A Friendly Match

Ex Pres. Kufuor Named Global Ambassador Against Hunger

kuffour Former President John Agyekum Kufuor was on Monday named a Global Ambassador against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to advocate on behalf of the world’s poorest and hungriest people.

A statement from the WFP said, with renewed attention focused on the issue of global food security, Mr Kufuor would help underline the importance of fighting hunger on several fronts by investing in long term agricultural development funded by the WFP. The statement said in partnership with an elite team of celebrities, sportsmen and statesmen, Mr Kufuor would emphasize the need to provide good nutrition for children in school.

“Former President John Kufuor not only talks the talk but walks the walk. Ghana is a leader in nourishing its children and Former President Kufuor can be a leader in getting others to follow his good work,” Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP, said. She said with the number of hungry people in the world expected to top one billion this year, Mr Kufuor would tackle urgent hunger needs and help the hungry poor to access affordable and nutritious food. “Ensuring that every child has proper nutrition has to be the goal of every world leader,” Mr Kufuor said. “I hope to inspire them all to strive for this goal,” he added.

President Obama: Ghana visit had no hidden agenda

president obamaAmerican President Barack Obama has described his visit to Ghana as a meeting of two allies without any hidden agenda.

Responding to concerns that his visit could be in pursuit of American interests in Ghana’s oil find or for the establishment of military base in Africa, he told the Daily Graphic exclusively in response to a questionnaire during his two-day visit to the country, “There is no hidden agenda here.”

“The United States and Ghana enjoyed strong relations long before oil was discovered in Ghana and long before the creation of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM),” he added.

Additionally, he said the US was already developing a comprehensive assistance programme for Ghana’s oil and gas sector, including embedded technical advisors and support for the country’s new oil and gas regulatory institutions.

The government of Ghana had earlier requested specific technical assistance from the US in that direction.

He, however, maintained that “all assistance that we provide will be closely co-ordinated with the government of Ghana”.
