Day of the Ghanaian Child marked in Accra
A Project Assistant of Right To Play, an international humanitarian non-governmental organization has called on parents to support their children to learn to keep the environment clean to enable them stay healthy at all times.
Miss Abenaa Anim-Adjei said environmental cleanliness plays a very important role in the socio-economic development of every nation and it was therefore necessary that children should learn from the grassroots. She made the call at the end of a two-hour Walk in Accra as part of activities marking this year’s ‘Day of the Ghanaian Child’ on Saturday. The Day which is celebrated throughout the country, was aimed at sensitizing children on the need to keep the environment clean and was under the theme ‘Cleanliness, Key to Survival’.
Participants of the Walk, which started from the Mamprobi Salvation Army School, went through the Tuesday Market to St. Mary’s Senior High School and back to the starting point.
The placard-bearing children engaged in various sporting activities and other games termed ‘Keep it Clean’, ‘Wash your Hands’ and ‘Garbage Collection’ after the Walk.
Miss Anim-Adjei expressed the hope that the children would imbibe the messages and impart them to their colleagues and parents to maintain a sound environment to stay healthy.

MTV Africa Music Awards, Finally!
Yes, finally African artists can look beyond a mere tokenism for their hard work as MTV Networks plans to launch an African version of its signature annual music awards. We no longer have to scramble for a single award at the MTV European Music Awards (EMA).
The announcement was made in Abuja this week by MTV Networks Africa senior VP and Managing Director Alex Okosi. Alex revealed that the MTV Africa Music Awards will take place at Abuja’s Velodrome venue on Saturday November 22. In a press statement, organisers said the MTV Africa Music Awards which would be sponsored by telecom giant, Zain, will be a two-hour TV broadcast, combining performances from top African and international stars with award presentations and an international superstar host, perhaps me! LOL!
The event will be broadcast around the world on MTV plus online, mobile and radio platforms, including pan-African TV channel MTV Base (DStv Channel 322 and GTV), MTV2 (USA) and African terrestrial TV channels STV and AIT (Nigeria), TBC (Tanzania) and TV3 (Ghana), and selected partner radio stations across the continent. The premiere event is expected to highlight contemporary African and international genres including hip-hop, hip life, R&B, rock, Afro Pop, Afro Beat, Kwaito, Bongo Flava, dancehall, soul, rock and funk.
Muntari Replaced Because of Ramadan!
Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho has revealed that he substituted Sulley Muntari during in the first
half of Sunday’s clash with Bari because he was suffering in the heat given his commitment to Ramadan.
The Ghanaian midfielder was taken after just 30 minutes because he struggled to cope with the searing heat as he had to avoid eating or drinking during the day. Ramadan is the month when it is required of every Muslim to fast from dawn to dust at the dictates of God.
The Ghanaian is a Muslim and coach Jose Mourinho explained that in his view: “Muntari had some problems related to Ramadan – perhaps with this heat it’s not good for him to be doing this (fasting). “Ramadan has not arrived at the ideal moment for a player to play a football match,” opined Mourinho.
During the month of Ramadan, practising Muslims fast between daylight hours, abstaining not only from food but also drink, including water. Such a practice is made that much tougher in the summer months in Europe when the days are longer than in Arabia, where the religion was founded, and humidity as well as temperature creeps up.
Much of Italy is currently experiencing temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius while sunset is at around 6.30am and sundown not until around 8pm. That means a Muslim would have to fast for more than 13 hours and for a professional sportsman that challenge becomes even harder.
Canada Celebrates GA Homowo Festival 2009

For the past 13 years, Toronto’s Ga-Dangbe community, appropriating Canada’s multicultural values, has celebrated the Homowo festival to not only show their rich cultural heritage to the rest of other Canadian cultural communities, but also rekindle their culture to their children, most of who were born in Canada and have the potential of not knowing their native culture.
Homowo recounts the migration of the Gas and reveals their agricultural success in their new settlement. According to Ga oral tradition, a severe famine broke out among the people during their migration to present day Accra. They were inspired by the famine to embark on massive food production exercises which eventually yielded them bumper harvest.
Their hunger ended and with great joy they “hooted at hunger” this is the meaning of the word HOMOWO.
