Health Benefits of Yams

yamsYams are members of the Dioscoreae family. Depending upon the yam variety, of which there are about 200, its flesh may be of varying colours including white, ivory, yellow or purple while its thick skin may either be white, pink or brownish-black. Their shape is long and cylindrical (oftentimes having offshoots referred to as “toes”) while their exterior texture is rough and scaly. Yams have a very starchy and slippery texture and when cooked, will either be creamy or firm, depending upon the variety. Their taste is earthy and hardy, with most varieties having minimal, if any, sweetness. Specific types of yams include Dioscorea alata (Hawaiian yam), Dioscorea batatas (Korean yam) and Dioscorea esculenta (sweet yam). Protection against Cardiovascular Disease Yams are a good source of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is needed by the body to break down a substance called homocysteine, which can directly damage blood vessel walls. Individuals who suffer a heart attack despite having normal or even low cholesterol levels are often found to have high levels of homocysteine. Since high homocysteine levels are significantly associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, having a good supply of vitamin B6 on hand makes a great deal of sense. High intakes of vitamin B6 have also been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Oil find: Ghanaians deserve to know what gov’t is doing

ghana-offshore-mapA Research Fellow at IMANI Ghana, Mr Bright Simons has expressed disappointment at the insidious way and manner in which the country’s oil resource is being managed.

He said the opaque clouds that have enveloped the processes relating to the management of the resource and the role government is playing should be of a major concern to all Ghanaians.

“The lack of transparency is unbelievable,” he told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.

President Mills refuses ‘corrupting’ Christmas gifts

attaMillsPresident John Atta Mills is refusing to accept Christmas presents this year because he fears they may be intended to corrupt him.

Sending hampers of food and gifts to people in authority is a Christmas tradition in the African country.

But Mr Atta Mills’s spokesman said the president felt it was better not to accept them in case the givers were seeking something in return.

Mr Atta Mills was elected in 2008 on a promise to fight corruption.

“Some people bring the gifts and their motives are genuine,” presidential spokesman Mahama Ayariga told the BBC’s Focus on Africa.

“Others, perhaps, just want to establish a relationship that would, in a sense, influence decisions that you might have to make in the coming year that relate to their interests.

“So you cannot really differentiate in terms of the different motives that people bring to this gift-giving exercise.”

The spokesman added that the gifts would be better enjoyed by the country’s underprivileged, such as children at orphanages.

Why Samini won Africa’s best performer 2009

saminiconcertIf ever there were doubters as to why Samini won MTV Africa’s best performer 2009, all soot and cobwebs of doubts were cleared in the minds of music lovers, Saturday when Samini’s ‘Experience Ghana Tour’ ended at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.

For well over three hours, Samini took the stage by storm and served one of the most delectable performances ever seen and set fans agog.

Never mind. The fans had already gone through a marathon night of singing and dancing to hits from Ghana’s finest rappers yet they showed little or no sign of exhaustion as Samini took over. And there they were, they shook every muscle, strained every accent and some even ‘lost their minds.’
