Nigerian Pirates Seize Ghanaian Captain
LAGOS (AFP) – Pirates have demanded a one-and-half-million dollar ransom for two sailors they seized at the weekend off the coast of Cameroon but close to Nigeria, a Nigerian navy officer said on Tuesday.
A Ghanaian captain and his Cameroonian engineer were attacked on Saturday off the restive Bakassi peninsula and taken from their vessel, Nigerian Navy spokesman commodore David Nabaida told AFP.
The yet-unidentified pirates “have asked for a ransom of 1.5 million dollars (1.1 million euros),” said Nabaida, adding the seamen are being held in Abana. Abana, a major town in oil-rich Bakassi peninsula, was part of Nigeria before the territory was ceded to Cameroon.

Parents, Teachers Asked To Teach Children Proper Sanitation Practices
Dr. Sebastian Sandaare, Lawra District Director of Health Services, has called on parents and teachers to instill in children the habit of cleanliness and proper environmental sanitation practices.
He said the poor environmental health practices could only be addressed in future if children were well educated on how to manage the waste they generated.
Dr. Sandaare made the call on Saturday at Lawra after a cleanup exercise organised by the Lawra District Hospital in collaboration with the District Environmental Health Department.
Stolen Cars in Castle
The Carl Wilson seized cars debacle has taken another twist, with a businessman, Alhaji Al-Wahab, claiming that he has seen his two vehicles at the seat of government, Osu Castle, and the forecourt of the Parliament House in Accra.
The murky issues that led to Wilson being dramatically sacked by President John Evans Atta Mills on Thursday escalated when the fed-up businessman took his case to the media after filing a writ against the deputy Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia and the Attorney General, over his three vehicles that he said miraculously vanished from the Tema Port.
Not even the interventions of Vice President John Mahama, National Security Advisor Brig-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (rtd), Head Of Communications at the Presidency Koku Anyodoho and Nii Lantey Vanderpuye could make Alex Segbefia and his side-kick, Carl Wilson, mellow down.
President Mills Is Not Physically Fit To Travel
A former Spokesperson to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Kwabena Agyepong, says President Mills has failed to attend some critical international assignments outside the country because he is physically not strong enough to embark on such trips.
Kwabena Agyepong told Citi Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu, on Thursday, March 25 that the Vice President had to step in for him and attend several important occasions such as the AU summit because the president’s health could not support him to undergo the strenuous activities involved in such trips.
“How many times has John Mahama been out? A lot of times…Mills can’t do it because he is physically not able to do it and that’s why even important occasions like Africa Union the Vice President had to go…He can’t do the strenuous work that Kufuor had to do” The President’s health has been a major source of concern to many since the electioneering campaign in 2008.
It is recalled that shortly after his nomination as the NDC’s flagbearer for the 2008 elections, NDC’s MP for Lower Manya Krobo, Hon. Teye Nyaunu called for the replacement of then candidate Mills because he thought he was not fit enough to run the race.

Pantsil said: “I thank God that things have gone on well for me as I am starting full training from Thursday.” “I have been going through physiotherapy, running and kicking for about three weeks now and I am now ready to join the first team. “The officials here at Fulham have done an amazing job on my injury and I want to repay the team with good performances when I return hopefully early next month.”
During his absence, Panstil underwent an operation to cure the posterior cruciate ligament problem but admitted his time on the treatment table has been difficult.”It wasn’t easy. Late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Commended For Free Education And Other Interventions
Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has been credited for introducing free education and other social interventions that facilitated the building of the human resource capacities of Ghana.
Dr Raymond Osei, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Cape Coast, who made this known in Sekondi said: “Ghana lacked the requisite human resource at independence and there was the need to develop a critical group that could assist and transform the country from a colony to a state.”
Dr Osei was delivering a lecture at the Kwame Nkrumah Centenary Campus lectures, organized by the Students Representation Council of Takoradi Polytechnic in collaboration with the All African Students Union at the weekend.
It was on the theme: “His ideas, his vision, his times and the record.”
According to him, Ghana could not have adopted the capitalist ideology at independence because the country did not have the people who were financially capable to follow such an ideology.
He noted that socialism is almost the same as the traditional value system in Ghana that views every person in society as brethren.
Dr Osei said socialism was ideal for many developing nations since it created a sense of belonging, giving them control over their resources. He explained that without socialism, it would have been difficult for Ghana to achieve and build its own foundation for accelerated development.
