‘A Sting In A Tale’ – Ghana Film Review

Fast growing Ghanaian film writer/producer/director  Shirley Frimpong-Manso decided to include the most glamorous ghosts yet out of Africa in her much anticipated fourth production, ‘A Sting In A Tale’. And for me, this very much represented the general feel-good theme of the movie; it is one for laughs and not taking life too seriously.

Sting-In-A-TaleFrom the trailer and synopsis that floated around before the premiere, it was clear that the movie would be full of twists and turns just in case the title was not suggestive enough. So how well was Shirley able to pull it off? I will get to that in a moment.
A Sting in a Tale’ revolves around two young couples in their quest to survive the harsh realities of life after university; unemployment, uncertainty, desperation and in the middle of it all, love. Young graduate, Kuuku (Adjetey Anang) is frustrated with unemployment and is faced with the possibility of losing his true love Frema(Lydia Forson) because Frema’s mother (Doris Sacketey)sees no good future in that relationship. With these pressures, Kuuku moves heaven and earth trying to find a good job and a means to provide the future he so desperately seeks for himself, his future wife and kids. He takes the most drastic measure by resorting to rituals and soon after that, his Frema passes away. After her death, Kuuku gets a well paying job and becomes a millionaire almost overnight.

Reggie Rockstone Mocks Obrafour

rockstoneWhen the whole controversy surrounding Obrafour’s hit song ‘Kasiebo’ started the hiplife grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone’s initial comments were that such developments are healthy for competition and the industry on a whole. However a recent video insert on TV Africa’s ‘The Rundown’ with Reggie answering questions about the rise in ‘beefing’, seems to suggest that the hiplife originator may have had enough of it already.

He described Obrafour as ‘Joe Shorty’ with a short man’s syndrome and finding the need to attack whoever that is popular at a given time just to push his music. He jokingly commented that “…you need someone short to know you are tall…” adding that he doesn’t take such comments seriously.

Instead he said he was focusing on making good music so he would be around for a long time.

Perhaps as a direct response to remarks by One Pesewa on A-plus’ ‘Kokonsa Radio’ which suggested that Reggie’s rap is ‘whack’, the grandpapa agreed that perhaps his game isn’t as tight now as it was some ten years ago. Reggie however challenged current rapper to try and lay a rap that could match up to any of his best works.

Why Samini won Africa’s best performer 2009

saminiconcertIf ever there were doubters as to why Samini won MTV Africa’s best performer 2009, all soot and cobwebs of doubts were cleared in the minds of music lovers, Saturday when Samini’s ‘Experience Ghana Tour’ ended at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.

For well over three hours, Samini took the stage by storm and served one of the most delectable performances ever seen and set fans agog.

Never mind. The fans had already gone through a marathon night of singing and dancing to hits from Ghana’s finest rappers yet they showed little or no sign of exhaustion as Samini took over. And there they were, they shook every muscle, strained every accent and some even ‘lost their minds.’

Ghana to host 2010 Miss Black USA Beauty Pageant

missblackGhana News – The proverbial Ghanaian hospitality, has earned the country the opportunity to host the Miss Black USA Beauty Pageant in 2010.

The show, which has been in existence for the past 26 years, is aimed at reconnecting Black Americans in the Diaspora to their African lineage. Chief Executive Officer of the Pageant, Ms. Karen Amington, made this known in Accra on Thursday, when he led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr Kwabena Akyeampong. Ms Amington said the event would boost the tourism potential of the country and attract investors.

She said it would also build good relations between Africans and Black Americans and portray the culture of Africa.

A member of the delegation, Mr. Gabriel Pomary said the US President selected Ghana to be the first Black African country to visit, because of the country’s good governance and democratic credentials. He said the programme would take place in Ghana annually even though other African countries like Egypt and Morocco had shown interest to hosting it.

Mr Pomary said more than 500 African- Americans would be part of the event.

Mr Akyeampong said August would be a perfect period to organise the pageant since it would not conflict with the World Cup Tournament in South Africa and traditional festivals in Ghana. 6 Nov. 09

He has produced and directed two movies so far. The first-‘Friday night’ has been released six months ago. The second one he says will be released next year February.

This move he says does not mean he wants to quite acting, “I am still acting full time but I want to be in the lime light when it comes to directing and I don’t want it to be late.”

Lumba Brings In Sarkodie and Samini on new album

daddylumba.ghanalinxThe king of longevity in Ghanaian highlife music, Daddy Lumba has wrapped up recordings for his forthcoming 27th album, and it is would be nothing short of what he has been noted for throughout the 25 years in the music business. The 10-cut album is cleverly titled ‘Aware Pa Ye Anibre’ to mark his 25 years of marriage to his wife. The title track explores the virtues of a good marriage that has stood the test of time and the constant public scrutiny.

With his usual catchy lyrics and rhythms, the new album is set to follow the success of previous albums by appealing to both the old and young. Perhaps even more so now since the music icon relied heavily on the productions of Kaywah, who is currently one of the biggest engineers in contemporary Ghanaian music. Still on the subject of staying relevant, Lumba also featured the current fastest rapper in Ghana, Sarkodie on one of the songs, ‘Anadwo Yi Deε’.

Although Lumba’s decision to do a campaign song for Nana Akuffo Addo in last year’s presidential elections ruffled a few political wings, his befitting tribute to the late Hon. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu would be more than welcomed by politicians across the divide. The song, ‘Baah Wiredu’ is a remembrance song for the much loved Minister of State; and a reminder that Ghanaians honour and remember virtuousness.
