Prince of Broadway is the story of Lucky, a charismatic hustler eking out a living in the underbelly of New York’s wholesale fashion district. An illegal immigrant from Ghana, Lucky makes ends meet by soliciting shoppers on the street with knock-off brand merchandise. Life is good for Lucky, but his dreams are suddenly upended when a child is thrust into his world by a woman who insists the toddler is his son.

A tender comedy of fatherhood, family and love set in the shadow of the Flatiron building and soaked in the colorful bustle of urban realism, Prince of Broadway reveals unseen lives creating their own knock-off of the American Dream.

Ghanaian star actress, Jackie Appiah is certainly having a good year. She recently followed her African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nod for best actress in a lead role with the City People Entertainment Award for best Actress in Ghana. The award which celebrates movies, music and comedy was held on July 18 at the 10 Degrees Event Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

Jackie who was nominated against the likes of Nadia Buari, Lydia Forson, Naa Ashorkor Mensah- Doku and Yvonne Nelson, says she didn’t expect to win the award because she felt after winning the AMAA nod she wasn’t going to win again. She is however excited by the honour and she believes the other nominees were equally good. “I am happy and proud that people have sat down to appreciate my work. This is the second award in the year; I give glory to God. I was competing with very good actresses, they are all equally good and so I felt that was a very tough category to win. I respect all of them because they are all good actresses, individually”.

The adorable actress was also nominated for Best Ghanaian movie personality but lost out to Juliet Ibrahim. She comments: “I have a beautiful personality but I cannot take home all the awards, someone else had to win some of the awards too. Juliet Ibrahim won the award and she is fantastic, she has a beautiful personality. So who else would they have given it to? I congratulate her, I am proud of her, she did a great job”.

Jackie will soon shoot a horror movie tentatively titled, ‘Graveyard’ with Peace Films and directed by Pascal Amanfo. The actress says she can’t wait to do the movie because she has never done a horror flick before. She also has another flick coming up with producer, Abdul Salam and according to the actress, it would be a blockbuster. She is impressed with the scripts for both movies and believes she will put up award winning performances in both.

Ghanaian Afro-Raggae singer Samini has made his target as an artiste vividly clear, in a first exclusive interview after his double marriage saga.

Speaking on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review”, Samini said: “I have always said that the Grammy is my target is and I want to get it, so am still working hard to get there”, he emphasized with so much determination.

He made this statement when Kwasi Aboagye, host of the programme, asked what was next for him after winning several awards. Samini has won over eight awards both in Ghana and on the international front. About his reported marriage to two women Christiana Aboagye Mensah and Mercy Geker, based in Canada and UK respectively, Samini said it is his private life and people should respect it as such.

“I think that it is still one’s right to maintain what you call one’s privacy regardless of how deep people dig into it and how people report it because in any case whatever you do people will talk about it the way they want to. All I can say is I have two lovely daughters”.

He recently made mother Ghana proud in New York City, as the “Best Entertainer” in Africa. Samini (real name: Emmanuel Andrew Samini) who continues to make waves on the international music scene, has added yet another award to the array of awards he has won over the past few years. He won the “Best African Entertainer” award at the just ended 29th edition of the International Raggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) 2010.

This took place on May 2, 2010 at the York College of Performing Arts Centre in Queens, New York. Samini competed in the same category with 2Face Idibia (Nigeria), D’banj (Nigeria), Amadou and Mariam (Mali) and Femi Kuti (Nigeria).

Other great names at the IRAWMA 2010 night, includes top nominee Jamaican singer Queen Ifrica, who won four awards and Haitan-born International recording artiste Wyclef Jean and civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton who won the honorary “Marcus Garvey Humanitarian Award”. Though Samini was not there to receive the award, he expressed joy and thanked God for bringing him this far.

“This is one of the few award events for which I have been nominated but couldn’t make it to the awards night, but the most important thing now is that I have won the award for Ghana and I thank the Almighty God for doing it again for me. I also thank my fans who have always supported me”, he stated.

He added that the organizers of the event confirmed this to his manager Tony Pun Danning, a day after the award night, via phone and email. Samini is currently in Ghana after his three months intensive studies in the UK and a two-week stay in South Africa.

The ‘Sweet Mistake’ singer who is one of the worldwide MTN music icons has just finalized the recording of the MTN official World Cup anthem in South Africa, with world renowned “Destiny’s child” singer Kelly Rolland from America, Awadi (Senegal), Krotel (Cameroon), Rola (Lebanon) Cameleone (Uganda), Zuluboy (South Africa), Jozi (South Africa) and Kwesta and Slikour, both from South Africa.

Samini is in Ghana now to put finishing touches to his fourth album titled “Crucial Entertainment Outlaw” (C.E.O). The album which has already produced three hit singles “Triga”, “Sweet Mistake, and newly released “Holiday”, currently receiving airplay, will feature great collaborations with international artistes such as 2Face Idibia (Nigeria), M.I (Nigeria), Cameleone (Uganda), HHP (South Africa), Young Joc (New York), Squatter Camp (South Africa), Obrafour and Pae Dae of R2Bees fame, from Ghana.

The 2006 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) and 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) winner disclosed to peacefmonline that he will bring an International Raggae artiste for a grand album launch in August, after the World Cup in South Africa. Samini will be in South Africa during “World Cup 2010” to perform with some Ghanaians and artistes from other parts of the world.

Nana Borro stole my song!’ Sk Blinks Originale reveals to all Ghanaians today on Entertainment Review, Peace Fm. He says he recorded ‘Ahayede’ 4years ago in a studio at Odokor in Accra.

Sokpo Koku Fabrice popularly known as SK BLINKS ORIGINALE has revealed that Nana Boroo, the face behind current hit track ‘Ahayede’ heard his song, and pleaded with him that they remake it.

‘The beat was unfinished when I reached studio…I ordered all the instrumentation, and sang the ‘AHAYEDE’ chorus right in the studio, and a verse; after 15minutes, I was done’. He says Nana Borro wanted to fuse his rap style into his song for the Ghanaian masses.

However, after recording his chorus, he (SK BLINKS) was persuaded to add a verse to the chorus, which he did after a little hesitation. After he completed his verse and chorus, he stepped out of the studio to get some water, but to his utmost surprise, he returned to the studio only to be told Nana Boroo had left. He quickly tried reaching Boroo on his cell phone, but it was also switched off.

Sk says he did not set eyes on Boroo again until after the song started playing on air.

‘The aligation that I demanded 500cedis before i appear in the video is also false’ he says.

‘Killbeats gave me 3cedis for transportation from the studio that day’.

He also reveals that he has featured in songs for Castro and Obuor, and they treated him well, gave him rights to use the songs for him personal shows, and even with that, the money goes to no one but himself

The latest movie, ‘Checkmate,’ from the stables of Sparrow Productions, drew a large audience at its premiere Thursday night at the National Theatre.

This is the fifth movie after the release of ‘Life and Living It’, ‘Scorned’, ‘Perfect Picture’ and ‘A Sting in a Tale’. The movies, directed by Shirley Frimpong-Manso, have so far won the hearts of many for the high standards they exhibited and many have said her movies are among the few that hold hope for Ghanaian movies internationally.

Shirley,’s two movies, ‘Perfect Picture’ and ‘A Sting in a Tale’ together got 11 nominations at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMMA) and hope to win some awards at the grand event on April 10 in Nigeria.

Unlike the usual intermittent power cuts that have bedevilled other movie premieres lately at the National Theatre, one will say Shirley was lucky to have premiered the movie twice the same day there and and walked away with a clean sheet.

‘Checkmate’ stars Nadia Buari, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, Ekow Blankson, KSM, with new entrants Senanu Gbedawo, Khareema Aguiar and Kwaku Boateng.

The Story

‘Checkmate’ tells the story of Kwame (Senanu Gbedawo) who made all the right moves in his life; a good job, a beautiful devoted wife, an adorable child and an impending promotion as a senior customs officer at the airport.

But what seems like a typical guy’s hangout on a weekend away from home in the company of his new friend and mentor, Kiki (Ekow Blankson), turns out to be the one wrong move he made. After losing a game of Chess, he succumbs to a bet to seduce the attractive, sexy Caroline (Nadia Buari).

A few weeks later, the consequences of a dirty forgotten weekend pops up in Kwame’s life, threatening to destroy everything he so dearly loves. But the games are just beginning when he realizes that Caroline’s demand for his love is nothing compared to the demands of a drug lord who will do anything to get Kwame’s assistance in smuggling drugs out of the country.

With his entire life hanging on a thread, Kwame knew he must try to win the game or risk losing everything. Holding firm to his values, he managed to win the ‘game’ by getting the drug baron and his accomplices arrested.

The movie is captivating and it tells the story of real life situations that one can easily be trapped in.

The storyline exudes humour and is easy to understand. This accounted for the constant laughter, cheers and claps from the crowd.

Movie enthusiasts who filled the National Theatre for the premiere walked home satisfied, having had value for their money.
