Legal experts in the entertainment industry has called on Ghana to patent, brand, package, and [...]

Legal experts in the entertainment industry has called on Ghana to patent, brand, package, and adopt international marketing mechanism for the modernisation of traditional dance, Kpanlogo, into Azonto dance for socio-economic gains.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA), has learned that that the sole Ghanaian Dance Craze Azonto, is making wide waves around the world and threatening to spawn its own YouTube industry as dance enthusiasts try to out-do each other by posting the most hilarious and most accomplished Azonto moves on the video channel.

According to the GNA study, the Azonto dance originated from the traditional Ghanaian dance, Kpanlogo which first started in indigenous localities in the Greater Accra Region such as Bukom, James Town, Chorkor and in the port town of Tema.

Now the Azonto dance has taken over other dance forms at clubs, house parties and churches in the country as mainly the youth and those across the world are infected with Azonto movements.

The free style dance involves the shaking of hips, stretching and pointing hands to different direction at a tempo to song beat and sometimes mimicking the performance of household chores like washing or doing some ironing.

More recently, some popular Ghanaian hip hop stars such as Sarkodie, 4×4 and Gasmillan have adopted the dance and arranged their musical beats to the movements of Azonto dancers.

The world has seen lots of Dance Craze creations ranging from break-dancing, the Macarena, the Twist and many more but few will beat the exhilarating vigour, dynamism and sheer creativity of Azonto.

Entertainment legal experts are therefore calling on the Ghanaian authorities to capitalise on the Azonto dance wave and protect it and use it to market the country.

He has been nominated and won several international awards from his last album, Hymns for the Rebel Soulwhich was released earlier this year. The awards include, Best African Artist at this year’s International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) and NAACP Image Award nomination for “Outstanding World Music Album”. The world acclaimed Ghanaian singer, now based part time in Los Angeles, was featured on CNN’s African Voices in September this year.

Rocky Dawuni is the only Ghanaian in the featured list, which is dominated by Nigerian artists. Sensational singer Asa, Nneka and 2Face Idibia make up the Nigerian artists in the list. Other renowned artists who made it to the list includes; Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour, Mali’s Salif Keita and Somali-born rapper K’naan who shot into international fame with his 2006 album, Dusty Foot Philosopher. Amadou et Mariam, duo from Mali also considered one of the continent’s biggest artists. The duo, since meeting at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind in the 1970s, has received international recognition for their musical diversity.

Grammy award-winning singer, the late Cesaria Evora, the most famous musical export from the Cape Verde Islands and South African choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo completes the list.

Sarkodie became the first ever Ghanaian to feature on the Tim Westwood’s show. Westwood is one of the most recognized urban DJ of the decade and is regarded to be an influential figure in hip hop as well as a pioneer of the UK scene. He has had artists such as 50 Cent, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Lethal Bizzle and many more appear on his show.

GH’s fastest rapper has been in the UK for the Azonto Tour, and whilst in the country has completed the remix version “U Go Kill Me” featuring comedian Eddie Kadi and chart topping artist Wretch 32.

Also from trusted sources we can soon expect collaborations with British rapper Chipmunk. On Monday tweets from both rappers suggest that their studio session went extremely well and the making of the track is set to be one of the biggest tunes of next year.

Sarkodie tweeted “Studio tym wif ma boy @ChipmunkArtist craazzyyy.. Baddest mcee,, Gh uk raah!!!”, Chipmunk also tweeted, “What a session in the studio man… Mud ting!!!!”.

For all you Sarkodie lovers who happen to be in Ghana during the Christmas period it has been confirmed that the “rapperholic” is set to hold his first ever concert on the 25th of December, to launch the much anticipated album at the Dome in Accra.

Sarkodie’s appearance on the Westwood’s show no doubt reflects the well deserved recognition of Afro beats as well as boosting the Ghanaian music scene.

The nominations for the 2011 edition of the Ghana Movie Awards were released at the nominations party [...]

The nominations for the 2011 edition of the Ghana Movie Awards were released at the nominations party last night at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi. The colourful event was graced by players of the movie industry and witnessed by various media houses including GhanaCelebrities.Com.

Two of Ghana’s female movie makers Shirley Frimpong-Manso and Leila Djansi obtained the highest nominations. They each got 21 nominations each.

Born Richard Sowah to one of Ghana’s soccer superstars (Daniel Boye Sowah), ReeZon moved to The United States to pursue higher education, after graduating from Morning Star School in Accra, Ghana.
After successfully obtaining a degree in Electrical Engineering, he pursued his profession but maintained a desire and determination to develop as an artist…and introduce Ghana to the world through his music.
His synthesis of well-crafted rhetoric and urban imagery blossomed in 2005, when he connected with Jphat of Hustle Harder Records. Together, ReeZon and Jphat created the hits, Take Me There and Stay On Da Grind, which generated a big buzz in Chicago and drew attention to his music. During the conception of his debut album, I Am The ReeZon, he drew from a strong collection of producers, and the album’s first single, Drinks On Me, garnered international success…captivating fans in both North America and Ghana.

ReeZon’s lyrical prowess is characterized by a fluency in language and thought that he has lived wholeheartedly – delving into pop culture and flirting with life in the fast lane – all of which provide creative insight for his music.
Poised to become one of Africa’s music moguls, ReeZon is the first artist to be launched by the independent entertainment company, Rych Entertainment – based in Chicago, Illinois. Catering to the African Continent and its Diaspora, Rych Entertainment’s level of global commercial success is attributed to the strong social network that ReeZon has built, and the expansive global distribution plan that the company has firmly established.

In November 2011, ReeZon is set to release his sophomore album… African Intelligence…the culmination of
twelve months of commitment and dedication to his craft. Still standing in the success of lifelong achievements, ReeZon has become an outspoken and empowered emcee with a maturity that belies the infancy of his career. He has evolved from a young, African child on the streets of Accra…with his feet firmly planted in the US…but a heart that forever remains true to African soil.

Saturday’s 2011 Fantasy Jam that was headlined by Jamaican dancehall artiste, Mavado and hosted by Ghana’s dancehall general Samini came off finally at the Accra Sports Stadium.

An initial postponement of the concert from October 1 to October 8 due to a last minute football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko could not deter patrons from filling one-fourth of the 40,000 seater capacity sports stadium.

The show that was billed to start 8pm finally took off around 11:00pm. After some comic performances which at a point nearly got the crowd booing the performers off stage, young dancehall songstress, Kaaki instantly brought life back into the show that was taking an early nose dive.

She looked hot on stage with curves very appealing to the eyes. She was not only well endowed in voice; she was also well gifted physically as her tight cloths exposed every single inch of shape she has been endowed with.

Singing her popular tune, Too Much and as if she was riding an imaginary stallion, Kaaki was already corrupting the naughty minds of patrons – she was a delight to watch.

Quick performances from Nii and Yaw Siki of Wope Dodo fame after Kaaki’s performance psyched up the crowd who were now in a party mood.

But it was the Man Insane, Kwaw Kese the King of the Streets who changed the complexion of the show dramatically. Dressed in camo, Kwaw Kesse brought his iconic energy-filled madness onto the stage.

Performing Ma Kwan and some of his latest tunes such as Popping which ushered Daddy Opanka onto the stage, fans were upstanding singing alongside Abodam who was equally trilled to be on stage.

It was right after Kwaw Kese had paved the way for Tamale based musician Sheriff Ghale that the weather decided to take a toll on the show. It started drizzling and looked as if it was going to be a minor drizzle but patrons were wrong! It poured heavily forcing everyone to seek shelter.

For about 30 minutes it poured, finally ceasing maybe through a 911 call to God with a passionate plea for the rain to stop for the show to continue. Right after the rain, Okomfo Kwadee got the round two of the show going.

It was a joy seeing him on stage after a long while. Performing with a live band, Kwadee was back in his elements, the fluidity he was known for was all on display on stage. He got the crowd miming to his songs.

R2Bees followed next. R2Bees’ performance was marred by an unexpected technical hitch that saw them perform without any instrumental. They had no choice but to only rhyme and rap their songs on stage. Tried as the technicians did, they could not resolve the issue. R2Bees left without giving off what they were known for especially their very expectant tune Agyei.

4×4 followed and the technical hitch that bedeviled R2Bees had been resolved. 4×4 were once again proving their Waist and Power on stage capping their performance with their smash hit Yesi Yesi.

Ghana’s fastest rapper and the king of the ever popular azonto, Sarkodie entered the stage in grand style erupting the stadium. The venue was now electrified as Sarkodie began inundating the packed crowd with song after song.

When he finally dropped his You Go Kill track – hell broke loose! Not even Bola Ray could turn down the lust of dancing to the azonto song. Bola had tried earlier to deceive the crowd that he was equally a master when it comes to the azonto dance but now was the time of reckoning and yes he did deliver.

Sarkodie prepared the stage for the ultimate battle of the night. It was arguably an expectant battle between Ghana’s Samini and Jamaica’s Mavado as to who rules dancehall music. While the two artistes had shied away from this alleged competition, the patrons at the stadium knew that was definitely on the menu.

Samini was the first to appear on stage flanked by men who hoisted the flag of Ghana and the spiritual flag of Ethiopia. The little said about his fashion sense on the night, the better – this got some fans angry arguing his costume was not African enough. Samini started slowly with many wondering whether this was the Samini they knew.

Not knowing he was just warming up. Samini can indeed be deadly – he knew how to communicate with the crowd and the manner he went about it was just a delight to watch. One thing that has made Samini an icon is his ability to do free-style virtually about anything and this night was no exception.

He managed to manipulate the fans to remove their cloths – even the ladies at the venue nearly fell for the trick. He also asked fans to pull out their mobile phone with their screen lights on, he asked for the stadium lights to be put off and what a beautiful sight it was – it looked like the sky filled with tinny bright stars – he sang about it too.

Samini dished out most of his popular tunes including Gyae Shi and Sweet Mistake setting the bar high – a record Mavado had to break – it was a tall order for the Jamaican visitor who was playing in an away match.

Filled with high adrenalin, Mavado also burst onto the stage uttering the word, “Ache saaaa,” tickling the excitement nerves of the thousands who couldn’t wait to see the Messiah man. He started his show with his tune, I’m so Special – the stadium was jamming with hungry dancehall enthusiasts.

Mavado kept jamming for several minutes serving several of his world acclaimed tunes including I’m On the Rock, Messiah, Pepper, Gangsta For Life ( Weh Dem A Do ) and Hope and Pray.

While Mavado’s stint on stage was much longer than Samini’s, Samini’s performance was felt more than Mavado’s. Samini connected with the crowd and was very fluid in his performance. Mavado brought to bear Jamaica’s style of show performance where artistes keep pulsing whenever they are performing a track.

In all, the 2011 Fantasy Jam lived up to its billing recording one of the largest crowds in a single show.
