Mills sworn-in as President

Accra, Jan. 7, GNA – Professor John Evans Atta Mills was on Wednesday sworn in as President of Ghana for a four-year first term following his victory in the December Presidential election. Wearing a rich kente cloth with a jumper underneath, he took the Presidential Oath and the Oath of Allegiance administered by the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood. He swore on the Bible.

Vice President John Dramani Mahama, dressed in white flowing “agbada”, also took the oath of office. He took the oath of the Vice President and the Oath of Allegiance. He also swore on the Bible. They then signed the oaths they swore. The ceremony took place at the Independence Square, which was turned into an open air Parliament. The function was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life.

New man to take office in Ghana

Ghana’s President-elect, John Atta Mills, is to be sworn in after his cliff-hanger election victory.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate beat the ruling party’s Nana Akufo-Addo in a hotly contested poll by a margin of less than 0.5% of votes.

The incoming leader’s centre-right NDC has a slim parliamentary majority of 114 out of 230 seats, over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 107.

President John Kufuor is standing down after serving the maximum two terms.

Mr Atta Mills is due to take office in the capital Accra in a ceremony expected to start at around 1100 GMT on Wednesday.

On the eve of the inauguration, President Kufuor showed his successor around his new home, the presidential residence officially known as Jubilee House.

Prof. Mills wins Election 2008

Accra, Jan. 3, GNA – Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), on Saturday declared Former Vice President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills as the winner of Presidential Election 2008. Prof. Mills Presidential Candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), obtained 4,521,032 votes, representing 50.23 per cent, of the valid votes cast while Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) got 4,480,446 votes, representing 49.77 per cent.

“Ladies and gentlemen on the basis of the official results given, it is my duty to declare Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, as the President-Elect of Ghana,” Dr, Afari-Gyan declared at a press conference to officially announce the winner of Election 2008.
